Miami University: laptop requirements
Yes — a conforming laptop is required. Miami University (College of Engineering and Computing) publishes a minimum specification students are required to meet.
The published specification
Operating system: Windows. For MME/CPB/ECE the page notes "(Students using Mac's have typically had problems with industry standard software for this major. Highly recommended to only get a windows platform)". CSE additionally lists a Mac option: "Apple M3 chip or better".
Processor: Processor I7 or Better (Windows). CSE Mac alternative: Apple M3 chip or better
Memory (RAM): 16GB memory (or higher)
Storage: Disk - Minimum of 500Gb (1TB is always better, especially if using virtual machines). CSE Mac alternative: 512 GB disk
Graphics: No graphics co processor is required
Warranty: A business grade laptop or better is required with 3-4 year complete warranty.
What this specification rules out
Not Acceptable: Chromebooks or similar; IPADS or similar
