College laptop requirements, by school

Do colleges require a laptop? 52 of the 113 US schools listed here state that students must own a conforming device; the other 61 publish a recommended specification only. 43 of those 52 requirements bind a single college or program — engineering, business, nursing — not the whole university, so check the scope column before you spend.

Every specification below is quoted from the university's own published page and links to that source. Where a school prints a clean RAM or storage figure it is shown; where the published wording is a range, a decimal or a free-disk-space number it is deliberately left out rather than rounded into a number the school never stated. How to read this table

Required means the university states a student must own a conforming device. Recommended is advisory and must not be read as a requirement. Who it binds is the scope the school itself publishes — most requirements are program-scoped, and an unqualified "your university requires a laptop" is false for most students at that school. Published minimum is the capacity the school prints, never one we inferred — including where that figure is clearly old, which is marked (dated) rather than quietly modernised. A scope longer than the column is trimmed with the full wording kept on hover and on the school's own page.

We name a machine means a real laptop was found whose own listing states capacities meeting that school's printed minimum. It is one machine that clears the bar, not a ranking, and not the cheapest. Where no confident match existed the school's page keeps a search built from the capacities it publishes.

Specifications change every intake. Open your school's row, read the published spec and follow the source link to confirm it against the live page — a machine that misses a program's stated minimum can be turned away at the door, and it is the one item on a dorm list you cannot fix with a second order.
