Iowa State University: recommended laptop specification

No — this is a recommendation, not a requirement. Iowa State University (College of Engineering) publishes a suggested configuration. You are not obliged to buy a machine that matches it.

💡 Recommended only. Iowa State University publishes this as guidance. An existing laptop that does the job is usually fine — do not buy a new machine on the strength of this page alone.

The published specification

Processor: Recommended column: "Intel Core i7" or "AMD Ryzen 7". Economical column: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5.

Memory (RAM): Recommended column: 32 GB. Economical column: 16 GB.

Storage: Recommended column: 512 GB SSD. Economical column: 256 GB SSD.

Graphics: Recommended column: "1-2 GB NVIDIA or AMD" dedicated. Economical column: Integrated.

Warranty: Not mandated. FAQ advises: "You should also consider a 3-year (minimum) warranty with accidental damage (if available)."

What this specification rules out

Nothing is disallowed. The university-wide page states ISU does not recommend tablets, mobile phones or Chromebooks as a primary computing device. The Engineering page warns some engineering software is Windows-only, so a Mac requires Boot Camp, a Parallels VM, or ISU remote computing.

Also listed on the same page

Recommended display resolution 1920x1080 (Full HD); economical 1366x768. Engineering software (MATLAB, Solidworks, Ansys, Autodesk, etc.) is supplied free via the SSO Dashboard, so no student software purchase is mandated.
