Kent State University: recommended laptop specification
No — this is a recommendation, not a requirement. Kent State University publishes a suggested configuration: 16GB RAM, 256GB storage. You are not obliged to buy a machine that matches it.
The published specification
Operating system: Windows 11 / macOS Sequoia
Processor: Windows: "Intel® Core™ i5 (13th generation or better)" / Mac: "Apple M2 (or better)"
Memory (RAM): 16 GB or better
Storage: 256 GB SSD or better
Warranty: "3-4 Year Warranty with Accidental Damage Coverage STRONGLY RECOMMENDED". Page also notes: "Standard warranties typically provide one year of coverage, and do not include accidental damage. Consider upgrading your warranty to include 4 years of accidental damage protection."
What this specification rules out
No hard exclusions. Page states Chromebooks and tablets are "discouraged as a primary computer unless specifically endorsed or provided by your school or department" — discouraged, NOT disallowed.
Also listed on the same page
Battery: "Minimum of 6-8 hours without charging". Page notes Kent State recommends an Apple or Dell machine because KSU is warranty-authorized to repair Dell and Apple on campus (fewer on-campus service options for other brands).
