Operating system: "No preference on brand or operating system" for CS, Chemical, Computer and Electrical Engineering. Separately, a campus network mandate applies: "Per UCOP cybersecurity mandates, under most circumstances, only computers on supported operating systems still receiving security updates may connect to the UCSB wired or wireless networks or remotely connect to campus resources."

Processor: Mechanical Engineering: "We recommend the new i-series processors from Intel, i5 and i7." All other listed majors (Computer Science, Chemical, Computer, Electrical Engineering): "No preference on brand or operating system."

Memory (RAM): Mechanical Engineering: "We suggest a minimum of 8GB+ of memory" (page adds that more RAM than minimum "can help your computer run more smoothly")

Storage: Mechanical Engineering: "256GB+ hard drive"; a solid state drive (SSD) is suggested as helpful, not required

Graphics: Mechanical Engineering: "a dedicated Nvidia (or AMD) card can help your computer run more smoothly" — suggested only

What this specification rules out

No device class is excluded from purchase. The page does state that the campus Ivanti VPN — "required for remote desktop from off-campus computers to the computer labs" — no longer supports ChromeOS as of May 2025, and that Windows 10 and earlier (after 2025-10-14) and macOS Ventura 13.x and earlier (after late November 2025) fall out of vendor support.
