University of Alabama: laptop requirements

Yes — a conforming laptop is required. University of Alabama publishes a minimum specification students are required to meet.

📌 This is a requirement, and it is university-wide. It applies to University of Alabama undergraduates generally. Confirm the current intake's tier before buying.

The published specification

Operating system: Windows laptops: "Microsoft Windows 10 or 11". Apple Macintosh laptops: "macOS 12.2 (Monterey) or later is recommended".

Processor: Windows: "Intel Core i5 processor or AMD equivalent (i7 recommended)". Mac: "Intel Core i5 or ARM equivalent (i7 or higher recommended)"

Memory (RAM): Windows and Mac: "16 GB RAM"

Storage: Windows and Mac: "500 GB solid-state drive (1 TB is recommended)"

Graphics: Windows: "A separate video card is recommended for better performance" (no dedicated GPU is mandated). No GPU line is published for Mac.

What this specification rules out

No platform is excluded, but the document warns: "It is highly recommended that students in any of the engineering degree programs have a Windows-based laptop. Computer Science and Cyber Security students are excluded from this recommendation and can use either a Windows or Mac laptop." It adds that Mac users are "responsible for installing and maintaining Windows Operating System if Windows-based software is required for any classes," that "The College of Engineering cannot provide technical support for installing or troubleshooting Windows on a Mac laptop," and that "M1 MacBooks require Parallels to run Windows. Parallels is not provided or supported by UA." Ten of the listed free software packages are flagged as not running natively on macOS.

Also listed on the same page

Video/display: "1920 x 1080 resolution with 13 inch screen (15 inch recommended)" for Windows; "1920 x 1080 resolution with minimum screen size of 13 in. (15 in recommended)" for Mac.
