Shared double: the complete dorm packing list
Two students, one room. The packing game is space-sharing and roommate coordination.
What's different for a shared double
- ONE fridge + ONE microwave between you — text your roommate first
- Room divider or curtain if you want privacy
- Bunk/loft-safe bedding if the beds stack
- Surge protector each (outlets are scarce)
Bedding
Almost every US dorm uses an extra-long twin (Twin XL) mattress — standard twin sheets will NOT fit. This is the #1 thing students get wrong.
- Twin XL sheet set (2 sets so you can swap on laundry day)
- Mattress topper (dorm mattresses are thin + firm)
- Mattress protector / encasement (bed-bug + spill protection)
- Comforter or duvet + insert
- Pillows (2) + pillowcases
- Mattress pad
- Throw blanket
Bathroom & shower
In a traditional hall you walk to a communal bathroom — pack for the trip. In a suite you split supplies with suitemates.
- Shower caddy (mesh, drains + carries)
- Shower shoes / flip-flops (non-negotiable for communal showers)
- Towels (2 bath + 2 hand + washcloths)
- Robe
- Toiletry bag
- Toothbrush holder
- First-aid kit + any medications
Storage & organization
Dorm rooms are small. Vertical and under-bed space is where you win.
- Bed risers (turn under-bed into deep storage)
- Under-bed storage bins (rolling, low-profile)
- Over-the-door organizer
- Stackable drawers / cubes
- Closet organizers + slim hangers
- Desk organizer
- Command hooks + strips (no holes in the wall)
Laundry
You're doing your own laundry now, probably in a shared machine room.
- Pop-up or backpack laundry hamper
- Laundry detergent (pods travel best)
- Stain remover pen
- Dryer sheets
- Drying rack (collapsible)
- Roll of quarters or laundry-card setup (check your school)
- Mesh bags for delicates
Tech & power
Outlets are scarce and far from the bed. Power management matters more than you'd think.
- Surge protector with long cord (+ USB ports)
- Extension cord (rated for the load)
- Laptop + charger
- Phone charger (a spare for the desk)
- Headphones / earbuds
- Small desk lamp (LED)
- HDMI cable / streaming stick (if TVs allowed)
- Power bank
Study & desk
Your desk is your office. Set it up to actually work.
- Desk lamp
- Desk organizer + supplies
- Whiteboard or wall calendar
- Backpack
- Notebooks / planner
- Sticky notes
- Comfortable desk-chair cushion
- Noise-cancelling headphones
Mini-fridge & snacks
Most halls allow a small fridge + microwave (check wattage limits). Coordinate ONE of each per room.
- Mini-fridge (check your school's size limit)
- Microwave (check wattage rules)
- Reusable water bottle
- Mug + a couple of bowls/plates
- Utensils
- Snack bins + airtight containers
- Brita / filter pitcher
- Coffee maker if allowed (single-serve)
