Purdue University: dorm packing list
What to bring to a Purdue University dorm: Twin XL sheets, a mattress topper, towels and a shower caddy, under-bed storage, a surge protector, a desk lamp, a fan and laundry supplies. US dorm rooms come furnished with the bed, desk, chair and dresser, so you're packing what goes on and in them.
Below is that list in full, plus the three things that genuinely change by school: the Indiana climate you're moving into, the room types on campus, and the appliance and prohibited-item rules only Purdue University Housing can confirm. The universal version lives on the complete dorm packing checklist.
Packing for Indiana: cold-winter
Move-in is warm, but pack for a real winter you'll hit by November: a heavy waterproof coat, insulated boots, gloves and a hat, and thermal layers. Dorm heating dries the air hard โ a small humidifier is worth it. Ship or store the winter gear and swap it in when it turns.
What Purdue University's campus means for your list
Purdue University sits in a city (West Lafayette, Indiana). Shops and same-day delivery are close, so don't over-buy before move-in โ bring the essentials and pick up bulky items (fan, drying rack, storage bins) once you've seen the room. City dorm rooms tend to be the tightest, so favour vertical storage and under-bed bins over floor furniture.
With around 44,503 undergraduates โ the 1st-largest of the 28 Indiana campuses covered here, laundry rooms and lifts are genuinely congested in the first weeks โ a drying rack and a proper laundry bag save you more time here than at a smaller campus, and a shower caddy you can carry one-handed matters on a busy floor.
Published on-campus room & board runs about $12,820/year โ $786 below the $13,606 median across the 1071 schools in this dataset and the 15th-priciest of the 28 Indiana schools here. That figure normally covers a meal plan, so check what your plan includes before buying a mini-fridge and microwave โ at many halls the fridge is the only one you actually need.

What's already in your Purdue University dorm room
Do not pack these โ US dorm rooms come with them: an extra-long twin bed frame and mattress, a desk and chair, a dresser or built-in drawers, and a closet or wardrobe. Bedding, a desk lamp, a mini-fridge, a microwave, storage bins and a fan are almost never supplied, and are what your packing budget is actually for. If you're placed in a forced triple, the third student is usually the one short on drawer space, so vertical and under-bed storage has to do the work the furniture can't.
Standard US dorm furnishings per College Board, BigFuture โ layouts differ hall by hall.
What not to bring to a Purdue University dorm
US residence halls consistently ban candles and open flames, halogen lamps, hot plates and exposed-element cooking appliances (toasters, toaster ovens, grills), space heaters, extension cords without surge protection, and pets other than fish. Most cap mini-fridge size and microwave wattage; many now restrict air fryers.
Common categories, not an official list โ bans differ by building and change most years.
Purdue University's actual housing rules
Bed size: Mattresses are 77โ80 inches long and Twin XL sheets fit either length; some rooms and locations have Full XL beds instead. If you're 6'4โณ or taller you can request an extended bed 12 inches longer than standard โ not available in URBA.
Fridge & microwave: One UL-approved refrigerator per room, capped at 4 cubic feet total including any freezer compartment, plus a microwave of 1000 watts or less.
Prohibited items: Banned outright: 3D printers, candles and incense, candle warmers, electric blankets, halogen and grow lamps, humidifiers, portable heaters and portable air conditioners, pressing irons, sunlamps, soldering tools, grills, fireworks, weapons including airsoft and paintball guns, motorized personal vehicles, and non-compliant extension cords. Banned in your room but allowed in the building's kitchenettes: air fryers, toasters and toaster ovens, crockpots, rice and pressure cookers, electric grills and skillets, blenders, and hot plates.
What's provided: A bed and mattress (some models loft or bunk, with a safety rail installed), window curtains or blinds that can't be removed or modified, a shower curtain, trash and recycling bins, a smoke detector, all utilities, and both Wi-Fi and a wired Ethernet port.
Purdue splits its appliance ban in two: an air fryer, toaster or rice cooker is banned in your room but explicitly permitted in your building's designated kitchenette, so it's still worth bringing if your hall has one. One caveat on the fridge cap โ Purdue's page prints the limit as '4/0 total cubic feet', almost certainly a typo for 4.0, so confirm with Housing if your unit is near that line.
