University of Michigan: dorm packing list
What to bring to a University of Michigan dorm: Twin XL sheets, a mattress topper, towels and a shower caddy, under-bed storage, a surge protector, a desk lamp, a fan and laundry supplies. US dorm rooms come furnished with the bed, desk, chair and dresser, so you're packing what goes on and in them.
Below is that list in full, plus the three things that genuinely change by school: the Michigan climate you're moving into, the room types on campus, and the appliance and prohibited-item rules only University of Michigan Housing can confirm. The universal version lives on the complete dorm packing checklist.
Packing for Michigan: cold-winter
Move-in is warm, but pack for a real winter you'll hit by November: a heavy waterproof coat, insulated boots, gloves and a hat, and thermal layers. Dorm heating dries the air hard โ a small humidifier is worth it. Ship or store the winter gear and swap it in when it turns.
What University of Michigan's campus means for your list
University of Michigan sits in a city (Ann Arbor, Michigan). Shops and same-day delivery are close, so don't over-buy before move-in โ bring the essentials and pick up bulky items (fan, drying rack, storage bins) once you've seen the room. City dorm rooms tend to be the tightest, so favour vertical storage and under-bed bins over floor furniture.
With around 34,177 undergraduates โ the 2nd-largest of the 34 Michigan campuses covered here, laundry rooms and lifts are genuinely congested in the first weeks โ a drying rack and a proper laundry bag save you more time here than at a smaller campus, and a shower caddy you can carry one-handed matters on a busy floor.
Published on-campus room & board runs about $15,328/year โ $1,722 above the $13,606 median across the 1071 schools in this dataset and the 2nd-priciest of the 34 Michigan schools here. That figure normally covers a meal plan, so check what your plan includes before buying a mini-fridge and microwave โ at many halls the fridge is the only one you actually need.

What's already in your University of Michigan dorm room
Do not pack these โ US dorm rooms come with them: an extra-long twin bed frame and mattress, a desk and chair, a dresser or built-in drawers, and a closet or wardrobe. Bedding, a desk lamp, a mini-fridge, a microwave, storage bins and a fan are almost never supplied, and are what your packing budget is actually for. If you're placed in a suite, the bathroom is shared with suitemates rather than the whole floor, so bath supplies get split between you โ agree who buys what before move-in.

What not to bring to a University of Michigan dorm
US residence halls consistently ban candles and open flames, halogen lamps, hot plates and exposed-element cooking appliances (toasters, toaster ovens, grills), space heaters, extension cords without surge protection, and pets other than fish. Most cap mini-fridge size and microwave wattage; many now restrict air fryers.
Common categories, not an official list โ bans differ by building and change most years.
University of Michigan's actual housing rules
Bed size: The standard mattress is 36โณร80โณ and takes Extra-Long Twin (Twin XL) linens.
Fridge & microwave: One refrigerator and one microwave per room: the fridge must stay under 5.5 cubic feet and 1.5 amps, the microwave under 800 watts. Both can be rented from College Products. In Munger Graduate Residences and Northwood Apartments, personal cooking devices and microwaves aren't permitted in individual bedrooms.
Prohibited items: Bed risers and anything else that elevates the bed, air fryers, toasters and toaster ovens, hot plates, electric skillets and grills, and any device without automatic shut-off such as a coffee pot, kettle or rice cooker. Also banned: halogen lamps, candles, wax warmers, diffusers and incense, extension cords thinner than 16 gauge, outlet splitters and multi-plug adaptors, daisy-chained power strips, wireless routers, 3D printers, doorbell cameras and Ring-style security cameras, decorations on your room door or in your window, hoverboards and e-scooters, fog machines, subwoofers and electric keyboards, space heaters, knives with blades over three inches, tanning beds, trampolines, satellite dishes, pianos, vapes and tobacco, and weapons โ including water guns and Nerf guns.
Bed risers are prohibited at Michigan, which surprises people, since risers are standard at many schools. Michigan uses modular furniture โ Building Block or Lifespace II depending on the hall โ that has to stay in a manufacturer-approved configuration. Air purifiers are allowed but should be checked against the California Air Resources Board list for low ozone emission, and humidifiers or dehumidifiers need advance approval from Michigan Housing.
