University of Florida: dorm packing list

What to bring to a University of Florida dorm: Twin XL sheets, a mattress topper, towels and a shower caddy, under-bed storage, a surge protector, a desk lamp, a fan and laundry supplies. US dorm rooms come furnished with the bed, desk, chair and dresser, so you're packing what goes on and in them.

Below is that list in full, plus the three things that genuinely change by school: the Florida climate you're moving into, the room types on campus, and the appliance and prohibited-item rules only University of Florida Housing can confirm. The universal version lives on the complete dorm packing checklist.

๐Ÿ“ Bed size: nearly every US dorm uses an extra-long twin (Twin XL) mattress โ€” standard twin sheets won't fit. Buy Twin XL, and double-check your school's housing page for the rare exception. Packing for Florida: hot & humid

Expect heat and humidity well into the fall. A powerful fan is essential โ€” confirm whether your hall has A/C, because many older dorms don't. Lean toward moisture-wicking bedding and breathable fabrics, keep flip-flops handy, and skip the heavy winter coat (a light layer covers the mild winter).

What University of Florida's campus means for your list

University of Florida sits in a city (Gainesville, Florida). Shops and same-day delivery are close, so don't over-buy before move-in โ€” bring the essentials and pick up bulky items (fan, drying rack, storage bins) once you've seen the room. City dorm rooms tend to be the tightest, so favour vertical storage and under-bed bins over floor furniture.

With around 35,629 undergraduates โ€” the 4th-largest of the 34 Florida campuses covered here, laundry rooms and lifts are genuinely congested in the first weeks โ€” a drying rack and a proper laundry bag save you more time here than at a smaller campus, and a shower caddy you can carry one-handed matters on a busy floor.

Published on-campus room & board runs about $12,120/year โ€” $1,486 below the $13,606 median across the 1071 schools in this dataset and the 28th-priciest of the 34 Florida schools here. That figure normally covers a meal plan, so check what your plan includes before buying a mini-fridge and microwave โ€” at many halls the fridge is the only one you actually need.

What's already in your University of Florida dorm room

Do not pack these โ€” US dorm rooms come with them: an extra-long twin bed frame and mattress, a desk and chair, a dresser or built-in drawers, and a closet or wardrobe. Bedding, a desk lamp, a mini-fridge, a microwave, storage bins and a fan are almost never supplied, and are what your packing budget is actually for. If you're in one of the apartment-style halls, a kitchen comes with the unit โ€” but cookware, dishes and utensils do not, so budget for a starter kitchen set on top of this list.

What not to bring to a University of Florida dorm

US residence halls consistently ban candles and open flames, halogen lamps, hot plates and exposed-element cooking appliances (toasters, toaster ovens, grills), space heaters, extension cords without surge protection, and pets other than fish. Most cap mini-fridge size and microwave wattage; many now restrict air fryers.

Common categories, not an official list โ€” bans differ by building and change most years.

University of Florida's actual housing rules

Bed size: Twin XL in most rooms โ€” with two exceptions UF names directly: Cypress Hall and the Keys Residential Complex have Full XL beds. Check your assignment before buying sheets.

Fridge & microwave: Refrigerators may not exceed 3.5 amps or 12 cubic feet โ€” an unusually generous size cap tightened by the amp limit. Microwaves are capped at 1500 watts, with no more than two microwaves per room or apartment.

Prohibited items: Candles including wickless ones, candle and wax warmers, incense, and oil or spray diffusers; floor-style halogen lamps; lava lamps and neon signs; ionizer and ozone-generating air purifiers; waterbeds; over-the-door hooks; wallpaper, contact paper and stickers; curtains and window decor; metal-tipped darts; weapons including toy guns; and cats and dogs. Toaster ovens, air fryers, electric frying pans, waffle irons, hot plates, rice cookers and flameless grills may only be used in kitchen areas, not in your room.

The halogen ban applies only to floor-style lamps โ€” UF explicitly permits a desk lamp with a fully enclosed bulb of 50 watts or less. Extension cords are tightly specified too: UL-certified, three-prong, 14 gauge or heavier, rated for one item only, and no longer than 10 feet.
